Getting Ready for the Frozen Four

2008 NCAA Hockey Championship Trophy

2008 NCAA Hockey Championship Trophy

This week I’m going to see the Frozen Four in Pittsburgh. Yes, Pittsburgh. My University of Minnesota hockey team was on a great roll this season, always near the top of the rankings, so my buddy and I bought tickets in the hopes they’d make the final four. That’s why I’m off to see the Three Rivers area and some championship hockey. Unfortunately it’s minus my hockey team, since they were upset in the playoffs and knocked out; Yale, who beat Minnesota, is there, as well as the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, Quinnipiac, and St. Cloud State University. Who will I cheer for? I’m not sure yet – maybe Yale since they beat my team, maybe SCSCU since they’re from Minnesota, I don’t know – but I do know I just want to see some good hockey and have a fun time while in town.

As I get geared up for the trip, I think back to 2008 when I saw the Frozen Four in Denver. My brother traveled out to Colorado, we saw some great puck, and had a lot of fun. We also saw a lot of hockey sweaters – jerseys to other folks – which I hadn’t seen in person before. Some were pretty cool – Northeastern, RPI, and Maine – some weren’t – Bemidji State, Bowling Green, UConn – and some I simply hate for the sake of a good ol’ fashioned rivalry – North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

So, looking back on the time when Boston College beat Notre Dame 4-1 to take the championship – Michigan and North Dakota lost in the semi finals – I pay homage to the wonderful sport of college hockey and all of the amazing sweaters the teams wear. Enjoy.
